Arsenal FC Vs. Udinese Calcio, UEFA Champions League Playoff: Preview

Arsenal and Udinese face off in the first leg of their Champions League playoff tie at the Emirates Stadium Tuesday. Though Arsenal are financial giants while Udinese are a small provincial club, their current similarities are massive.

Arsenal FC have never lost a UEFA Champions League qualifying tie, but that immaculate record is set for perhaps its toughest test to date as Udinese Calcio come to London.

Previous meetings
The sides are meeting for the first time in UEFA competition. Arsenal have played 25 games against Italian clubs with the record W11 D8 L6 (W6 D4 L2 at home). The most notable of those fixtures was the 1994 UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final, Alan Smith scoring the only goal in a 1-0 victory against Parma FC in Copenhagen.

Udinese’s only previous game against English opponents was a 2-0 home victory against Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur FC in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage. Antonio di Natale put Udinese ahead from the penalty spot, Simone Pepe adding the second four minutes from time.

Match background
Arsenal are unbeaten in ten European home games (nine wins, one draw) since a 3-1 loss to Manchester United FC in the 2008/09 UEFA Champions League semi-final. During that run they have scored 34 goals − an average of over three a game − and conceded seven.

Udinese have gone four away games without a win since beating FC Spartak Moskva 2-1 in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup group stage, a run comprising three defeats and a 2-2 draw at KKS Lech Poznań. Udinese’s 2008 defeat of Tottenham was the start of a five-game unbeaten sequence at home in Europe, a run of four straight wins followed by a 3-3 draw with SV Werder Bremen in the 2008/09 UEFA Cup quarter-finals.

The Gunners have won only one of their last eight European away games – 3-1 at FK Partizan in last season’s group stage. They have lost their last three games on the road. Arsenal won the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and UEFA Super Cup in 1994, and have reached the final of the other two major club competitions (UEFA Cup, 1999/2000 and UEFA Champions League, 2005/06), losing both. Arsenal have featured in every UEFA Champions League group stage since 1998/99. They have not played in the UEFA Europa League since its evolution from the UEFA Cup and their most recent game in that competition was the 1999/2000 final, which they lost 4-1 on penalties to Galatasaray AŞ after a goalless draw in Copenhagen.

Arsenal have come through a qualifying round to reach the UEFA Champions League group stage for four of the last seasons, going straight into matchday one last term. They won all eight of those qualifying games, overcoming NK Dinamo Zagreb (2006/07, agg: 5-1), AC Sparta Praha (2007/08, agg: 5-0), FC Twente (2008/09, agg: 6-0) and Celtic FC (2009/10, agg: 5-1).

Udinese’s only previous group stage campaign came in 2005/06. Under Serse Cosmi, they came within five minutes of reaching the round of 16, only to concede twice to FC Barcelona in their final Group C match and miss out on second place. That campaign brought the club’s only previous appearance in UEFA Champions League qualifying. They beat Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-0 away and 3-2 at home in the third qualifying round.

.
Leeds United vs Hull City English League Championship preview

Leeds' new loan signing Andy Keogh is expected to go straight into the starting line-up for the home clash with Hull.

The 25-year-old Republic of Ireland international, signed initially on loan until January, is a likely starter as manager Simon Grayson is still without strikers Luciano Becchio, Billy Paynter and Davide Somma, while winger Max Gradel is suspended.

Becchio (hamstring) and long-term absentee Somma (knee) have yet to play this season and Paynter missed out on Saturday with a thigh strain.

Leeds will also be without suspended skipper Jonny Howson. The midfielder and Gradel were both sent off during Saturday's home defeat to Middlesbrough for two yellow card offences and will sit out respective one-game bans.

Grayson could turn to Ramon Nunez and Lloyd Sam, who both stepped off the substitutes' bench against Middlesbrough, while young defenders Tom Lees, 20, and Zac Thompson, 18, will be hoping to feature again after making their debuts at the weekend.MHull manager Nigel Pearson will pick from a virtual full-strength squad.

Defender Liam Rosenior (knee), striker Dele Adebola (back) and Aaron Mclean (calf) all returned to action as the Tigers secured their first win of the season at Ipswich.

Rosenior started at Portman Road and is expected to retain his place, while Adebola and Mclean were both late substitutes' and may have to settle for a place on the bench again.

Assistant manager Craig Shakespeare said: "There's a few aches and pains and niggles, but they all reported in [on Sunday].

"They'll train again and there are a couple who might just do a bit less, but we'll wait and see how they are on Tuesday morning.''

Defender Paul McShane (calf) and winger Cameron Stewart (knee ligaments) are still unavailable

Events of the  the MATCH

Rubin Kazan lie in 5th position in the Russian Premier league standings after 20 matches played. Facing Lyon will be a difficult task especially with selection problems as important players such as Alexander Ryazantsev, Carlos Eduardo, Cristian Ansaldi and Alexander Orekhov are all carrying injuries.
It has been a strange season for Rubin as they have been quiet in the transfer market since the season began in March. Only days ago they did make a new signing as Berdyev seems to finally have decided to strengthen Rubin’s attack. The signing of Paraguayan International Nelson Valdez from Hercules for just over 4 million euros will definitely be a welcomed addition to the club but with 0 appearances for Rubin it is doubtful Berdyev will use the Paraguayan so early into his Rubin career.
Rubin’s strengths lie in defence and organisation, this has been well noticed in Europe as Rubin has lost just once against Barcelona in 4 matches since 2009, including a win at the Nou Camp.
Although missing Ansaldi and Orekhov due to injury, Rubin still have a strong backline. 24 year old Italian International Salvatore Bocchetti has proven to be a very strong defender and one of the best in the Russian league, Russian veteran Sharonov still uses his vast experience to read plays effectively.
19 year old Georgian defender Kvirkvelia was called up in mid July from the youth team and slotted in between Bochetti and Sharonov cementing his spot in the first team. These three players will be integral if Rubin want to get the result needed.
Rubin is missing key players in midfield who in previous seasons made Rubin such an uncomfortable opponent, it is difficult to see whether the players available can take advantage of the little chances Rubin will have in attack. 25 year old Russian, Alan Kasaev is a threat and the other three players in midfield (Karadeniz,Natkho,Noboa) are still effective but missing players of such calibre as Ryazantsev and Carlos Eduardo will make it extremely difficult against a Champions league knockout round regular such as Lyon.
Upfront Rubin has been relying on 23 year old Dyadyun. Dyadyun has only scored 1 goal in his 16 appearances this season. With 34 year old Medvedev the only depth in attack it is clear where Rubin struggles. Calling back Martins from loan and signing Valdez may help that is if they even play. Although missing key players and a virtually non existant attack Rubin did win both home and away legs against the favoured Dynamo Kiev. Edit:Martins and Valdez will not be traveling to the away leg.
Lyon are clear favourites but if Rubin can frustrate Lyon with patience it might not come as a shock seeing Rubin grab an unlikely result. The Rubin coach, Berdyev has a wealth of experience especially when lined up against Rémi Garde who became head coach of Lyon in June. This is also the first team Garde has managed and it will be interesting to see whether all his years as an assistant coach has brewed him for Champions League football.

FC Twente vs. SL Benfica UEFA Champions League preview

FC Twente will hope for better luck against UEFA Champions League play-off rivals SL Benfica than they experienced in their last meeting with Portuguese opponents.

FC Twente’s only previous tie against a Portuguese team was against Sporting Clube de Portugal in the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. The Dutch club went out on away goals after a 0-0 draw in Lisbon preceded a 1-1 draw in Enschede, Peter Wisgerhof’s own goal five minutes into added time cancelling out Douglas’s opener. As well as Wisgerhof and Douglas, Wout Brama, Bryan Ruiz and Sander Boschker were all involved in that tie.

Nikolay Mihailov − the son of former CF Os Belenenses goalkeeper and current Bulgarian Football Union president Borislav Mihaylov − came off the bench following Boschker’s dismissal in the first leg and immediately saved a penalty.

SL Benfica have played 19 games against Dutch sides with the record W7 D7 L5 (W1 D6 L2 away). They have drawn their last four away matches against Dutch sides but won their last four home games, a run which stretches back to a 2-1 loss against PSV Eindhoven in March 1975. Their only away win  in  the Netherlands came as  they beat AFC Ajax 3-1  in  the quarter-finals of  the 1968/69 European Champion Clubs’ Cup. However the Lisbon side lost the return leg by the same margin and went down 3-0 in a replay on neutral territory at the Stade Olympique Yves-du-Manoir in Paris. Benfica met PSV Eindhoven in the 1988 Champion Clubs’ Cup final in Stuttgart, losing 6-5 on penalties after a 0-0
draw.

Twente have lost just one of their last eight European home games, a 3-1 reverse against Villarreal CF in last season’s UEFA Europa League quarter-finals. Four of those fixtures ended in draws.

Benfica have won just one of their nine last European away games, losing five.  Benfica have picked up 13 victories from their last 15 European home games, posting five in succession at the Estádio Sport Lisboa e Benfica since their only home loss in that sequence – 2-1 against FC Schalke 04 in the 2010/11 UEFA Champions League group stage.

FC Twente have won just one of their last five European away matches, 2-0 at FC Rubin Kazan in the 2010/11 UEFA Europa League round of 32.  Twente made their only appearance in the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2010/11 after winning their first Dutch title the season before. This is Twente’s third attempt at UEFA Champions League qualifying. They lost out to Arsenal FC in the 2008/09 third qualifying round and to Sporting on away goals the following season. This year, they overcame Romania’s SC Vaslui to reach the play-offs, a 2-0 second-leg victory their first in six qualifying games.

SL Benfica returned to the group stage after a two-season absence in 2010/11, having competed in three successive group phases up to 2007/08. European champions in 1961 and 1962, the Portuguese team had their best runs in the UEFA Champions League era in 1994/95 and 2005/06 when they reached the quarter-finals.

Benfica have featured in qualifying on five occasions, reaching the group stage three times: 1998/99 (Beitar Jerusalem FC, agg: 8-4), 2006/07 (FK Austria Wien, agg: 4-1) and 2007/08 (FC København, agg: 3-1). They missed out in 2003/04 (S.S. Lazio, agg: 1-4) and 2004/05 (RSC Anderlecht, agg: 1-3).

Manchester City Vs Swansea 4-0 - Roberto Mancini Interview
by sporty in

Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini feels that record signing Sergio Aguero is still not at full strength despite his stunning two-goal debut against Swansea.
The £38million Argentine came on for the last half hour of City's 4-0 demolition of the newly-promoted Swans to stunning effect, linking up brilliantly with David Silva and also proving an assist for the Spaniard.
The Italian resisted the temptation to start Aguero from the off, but with his side taking the lead through Edin Dzeko shortly before the hour, he allowed his new marquee signing to take centre stage.
I think he needs to recover as he only finished the Copa America three weeks ago, Mancini told Sky Sports 1.
Fantastic
"He needs another two to three weeks to be 100%, maybe. For me he's a fantastic striker, young, and he's going to be a fantastic player for us.
Mancini was not only pleased with Aguero's impact, but was also delighted with his side's performance, where they demonstrated the talents that could see a real challenge to Manchester United's Premier League crown.
I am delighted with this performance, he added.
In the first half, Swansea played very well. We had some problems, then we pressed them and had some chances and in the end I am very happy."
